Founded in 1913 by tailors Ralph Hawes and George Frederick Curtis, the first Hawes & Curtis store was opened at 24 Piccadilly Arcade. Since then the brand has been favoured by many famous people such as Cary Grant, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Lord Mountbatten, Fred Astaire, Clark Gable and the Duke of Windsor.
Over the years they have received three royal warrants; in 1922 by the Prince of Wales (later known as the Duke of Windsor), in 1938 by King George VI and in 1957 by the Duke of Edinburgh.
They are known for introducing the backless evening waistcoat and for helping the Duke of Windsor invent the Windsor knot by adding a layer of interlining to his ties.
